Designing for Natural Light
How orientation, glazing ratios and interior sightlines shape a building long before finishes are chosen.
August 24, 2026The Virginia Garden Pavilion, the Minnesota Lakeside Cabin, and a small urban infill lot we completed last year share almost nothing in style — but all three were shaped more by their constraints than by any stylistic brief.
A tight footprint forces decisions that a larger site lets you avoid: what actually needs its own room, where the structure can disappear into the envelope, and which views are worth fighting the setback lines for.
